The AE Cardiff Hub participated in the conference Welsh Policy and Politics in Unprecedented Times, organised by the Wales Centre for Public Policy and the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) on Friday 24th May 2019 at Swansea University.
The Cardiff Hub is leading the systematic review for the new SAPEA project Towards an EU sustainable food system, coordinated by ALLEA (All European Academies). The first systematic literature review advisory group meeting took place on 21st May 2019. It was organised by the Hub and hosted by PLACE (Sustainable Places Research Institute, Cardiff University).
On 11th January 2019, Prof Ole Petersen, Academic Director AE Cardiff Hub and Vice President Academia Europaea, handed over a new SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) report to the European Commission Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) on behalf of the SAPEA Board. Prof Petersen was representing Prof Sierd Cloetingh, President Academia Europaea and Chair of the SAPEA Board, who attended the expert workshop the previous day.
The Cardiff Hub was delighted to be at the Swansea Science Festival 2018 on 3-4 November to promote the Food from the Oceans SAPEA report’s key messages. Louise Edwards, Cardiff Hub Manager, was at the event to support two exhibitions within the Aqua Sphere. We collaborated with Dr Ruth Callaway’s Marine Explorers activities on “Protecting our oceans and combatting climate change!” and with Dr Sara Barrento on the SMARTAQUA stand, “The sea is our Fishmonger”.
Following the first introductory meeting on 11th September, the second working group meeting of our latest SAPEA project Making sense of science under conditions of complexity and uncertainty took place on 29th October at the prestigious Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Based on its own initiative, the European Commission Group of Chief Scientific Advisors has adopted the topic Making sense of science under conditions of complexity and uncertainty to address policymakers using scientific advice within the European Commission.
Professor Graham Hutchings of Cardiff University and Member of Academia Europaea (MAE), is one of the authors of the newly-published evidence review report, Novel carbon capture and utilisation technologies: research and climate aspects. Professor Hutchings was selected as one of the working group members that produced the report for the European Commission.
Louise Edwards, Hub Manager, represented SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and Academia Europaea at a high-profile event held at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences on 23rd May. The meeting brought together a number of Portuguese experts to examine the Food from the Oceans reports, published through the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism last November.
