Professor Nils-Eric Sahlin MAE is the former Chair of the Swedish Research Council’s Expert Group on Ethics and a current member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE).  He was a member of the SAPEA international working group that produced the Evidence Review Report, Making Sense of Science for Policy under Conditions of Complexity and Uncertainty (SAPEA, 2019), which was coordinated by Academia Europaea.

On 11th February, a well-attended workshop took place at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, to discuss the recent Making Sense of Science for Policy report and its implications for policymaking at European and national level.

A seminar hosted by Academia Europaea Bergen Hub assesses the findings of the SAPEA report ‘Making sense of science for policy’ and reflects on what insights might be applied to science advice in Norway


The Academia Europaea Bergen Hub has hosted a successful seminar in Oslo, in collaboration with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.  The seminar, held on 4th November at the House of Literature, assessed the findings of the recent SAPEA report, Making sense of science for policy and reflected on what insights might be applied to the science advice process in Norway.

Science advice is critical to democracy and our way of life

Optimising the relationship between scientists and policymakers, publishing a code of good practice on science advice and involving stakeholders more effectively are all ways of strengthening science advice for policy, according to the panel at a European Commission meeting in Brussels on 26th September.

Update on the launch of the SAPEA Evidence Review Report ‘Making sense of science for policy’

The latest SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) Evidence Review Report, Making sense of science for policy under conditions of complexity and uncertainty, was coordinated by the Cardiff Hub and published on 9th July 2019.

In the month after the launch, the report has featured in 16 articles Europe-wide, including Research Professional (with over 280,000 registered users worldwide) and Cardiff University’s website.

The AE Cardiff Hub has overseen the completion of the Evidence Review Report Making sense of science for policy under conditions of complexity and uncertainty for the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) as part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM).
