ESOF2022 session: The Chair: Fact or Fiction? Addressing the challenges faced by women leaders in academia

We were delighted to be a part of this year’s EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) conference, the largest biennial interdisciplinary meeting on science and innovation in Europe.

AE Cardiff, together with CALIPER and the Young Academy of Europe, held a webinar on 16th July as part of ESOF2022. The session addressed challenges faced by women leaders in academia, using the Netflix comedy-drama, The Chair as a backdrop to the discussion.

The webinar began with real-life experiences of Professor Mangala Srinivas of Wageningen University. Professor Srinivas covered a diverse range of issues on gender equality, including the concern of not having a permanent contract, challenges associated with being an expat and the problems of lack of career recognition.

Dr Susanne Täuber, Associate Professor & Rosalind Franklin Fellow at the University of Groningen, gave the keynote talk in which she highlighted the gap between gender equality policy and practice within the academic sector, and why this gap exists.

Dr Sara Aguirre-Sánchez-Beato of Université Libre de Bruxelles and Marcelo Mora of IRB Barcelona, highlighted two active examples of Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). The GEPs were developed within the context of CALIPER, a European-funded project on gender equality in STEM fields, aiming at achieving structural changes in the research and innovation sector.

The webinar was expertly chaired by Dr Gemma Modinos, who represented the Young Academy of Europe.
