The celebratory symposium in honour of Professor ter Meulen was chaired by the current Leopoldina President, Professor Gerald Haug ML MAE. The speakers included the former federal minister for education and science, Dr Annette Schavan, the current minister for science, energy, and climate protection of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Professor Armin Willingmann, and the former Secretary General of the Volkswagen Foundation, Professor Wilhelm Krull MAE.
Professor Ole Petersen FRS ML MAE, who represented Academia Europaea at the occasion said:
“It was a great privilege and pleasure to be part of the very dignified celebration of Volker ter Meulen, who was President of the Leopoldina at a crucially important point in the Academy’s long history (founded in 1652) when, in 2008, it was formally declared to be the German National Academy of Science. Volker played a key role in this critical transition and was also very successful in obtaining substantial federal funding for the re-building of the magnificent palace that is now the home of the Academy in Halle and where the symposium took place.”
