The outstanding achievements of four members of Academia Europaea have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for 2021.

Conductor and Musicologist, Professor Jane Alison Glover MAE, has become Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to Music. Economist, Professor Rachel Susan Griffith MAE has also been awarded Dame Commander for her services to Economic Policy and to Education.  

Professor Wendy Anne Bickmore MAE and Professor Francesca Gabrielle Happé MAE have become Commanders of the Order of the British Empire. Professor Bickmore is Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh. She has been recognised for her services to Biomedical Sciences and to Women in Science. Professor Happé, a Cognitive Neuroscience Professor at King’s College London, has been honoured for her services to the Study of Autism.

At AE Cardiff’s host institution, Cardiff University, Professor Anthony Keith Campbell, Honorary Research Professor at the University’s School of Pharmacy has become Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services to Biochemistry. MBEs were awarded to Professor Barbara Chadwick, from the School of Dentistry, for services to paediatric dental health and to Dr Tamas Szakmany, from the School of Medicine, for services to the NHS during COVID-19. OBEs were awarded to Sara Pepper, Director of Creative Economy, for services to the creative economy, inspiring, encouraging and supporting working relationships across the city through networking, partnership engagement and knowledge exchange and to Professor Daniel Kelly, from the School of Healthcare Sciences, for services to cancer care research and education both nationally and internationally.
