Professors Colin Riordan MAE and Val O’Donnell MAE, receive their awards for their work in higher education and research.
Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan MAE, has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2023 New Year Honours, for services to higher education. Separately, it has been announced that Professor Val O’Donnell MAE has been awarded the title of Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to biochemical research.

About Professor Colin Riordan
Professor Colin Riordan has been President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University since 2012, and was previously Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex and Pro Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Newcastle University. He is widely published on post-war German literature and culture. He is Chair of The Conversation Trust (UK) Ltd, Chair of IDP Connect’s Strategic Advisory Group and Chair of the Welsh Higher Education Brussels Board. He is also Vice-Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and a Trustee of the Edge Foundation and the UCAS Board.
About Professor Val O’Donnell
Professor Val O’Donnell is co-director of the Systems Immunity Research Institute, School of Medicine at Cardiff University. Her research focuses on discovery and characterisation of inflammatory bioactive lipids involved in cardiovascular disease, dementia and wound healing.
Val O’Donnell is an editor of the open access journal FUNCTION. Her review into the potential of oral mouthwash to reduce Covid-19 transmission in the early stages of infection was the first paper published by the journal. She has been awarded Fellowship of The Academy of Medical Sciences.
