European Review publishes insights from the Academia Europaea Annual Conference 2022



In the most recent edition of the European Review (Volume 31 – Issue 4 – August 2023), you’ll find a collection of articles and news stemming from the proceedings of the Academia Europaea’s Annual Conference, convened in Barcelona in October 2022. 

Among the articles is Sierd Cloetingh’s Gold Medal Lecture given at the Academia Europaea Building Bridges Conference 2022: Bottom-up Probing Earth System: A Journey in Deep Time and Space.

Sierd Cloetingh, President of Academia Europaea (2014 – 2021), received his Gold Medal at the Academia Europaea’s Annual Conference held in Barcelona in October 2022. Robert-Jan Smits, architect of the Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission and a crucial player in European research, gave the laudation. View the recording.

The latest edition of the European Review also includes contributions from award winners Philippe Aghion, Gergely Toldi and Nancy Cartwright. 


About Sierd Cloetingh

Sierd Cloetingh was the 2022 winner of Academia Europaea’s prestigious Gold Medal award. A Distinguished Professor at Utrecht University, he was President of Academia Europaea from 2014 – 2021. He was a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council from 2009-2015 and Vice-President from 2014-2015. He served as President of the Association for European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) from 2017-2019.
