About Sir Stephen Holgate CBE MAE FMedSci
Stephen Holgate is Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. He was Chair of Main Panel A (Biomedical & Life Sciences) for REF2014, the UK Government’s research excellence framework for evaluating all university-based research in the UK. Professor Holgate’s fields of scholarship include medicine, clinical immunology, allergology, lung function, asthma, translational medicine, immunopharmacology, pollution, environmental epidemiology and genetics. He received the 1999 King Faisal International Prize in Medicine for his work on allergic diseases. In 2011, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for his contribution to clinical science.
Sir Stephen Holgate was elected to Academia Europaea in 2013. He is Founder Chair of the Academy’s Clinical & Veterinary Section and played a key role in the Academy’s recent Translational Medicine project.
