Academia Europaea welcomes Cardiff University’s President and Vice-Chancellor to its membership
We’re delighted to announce that Professor Colin Riordan, President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, has been elected to the Academia Europaea.
Professor Riordan has been elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea in recognition of his significant services to European scholarship and the Academy.
Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS, Vice-President of Academia Europaea said:
“It is a great pleasure to congratulate our President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan, on his election as a Member of Academia Europaea (MAE). This award recognises Colin’s standing as an eminent scholar of post-war German literature as well as his successful efforts to place Cardiff University in a European context by partnership agreements with the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and more recently with the University of Bremen.
Furthermore, Colin established, in partnership with Academia Europaea, the Cardiff University Knowledge Hub in 2015, which has become a central partner in the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium, providing scientific evidence in response to requests from the European Commission. Colin has thereby further strengthened Cardiff University’s already strong European reputation.”
About his recent election to the Academia Europaea, Professor Riordan said,
“I feel privileged to be elected a member of Academia Europaea. I am looking forward to working with some of Europe’s most distinguished scientists and scholars and playing my part in promoting research, education and learning. As Vice-Chancellor my objective has been to create a University that is global and outward looking. The UK’s exit from the EU and the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic have made the role of Academia Europaea even more crucial. It is vital that we continue to use our collective voice to champion interdisciplinary and international research.”
