Cardiff Hub Director visits China

Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS, Academic Director of the Academia Europaea – Cardiff University Knowledge Hub and Vice-President of Academia Europaea, visited Jinan University in Guangzhou, China last week. Jinan University is one of the oldest and largest (~50000 students) Universities in China, dating back to the Qing Dynasty and belongs to the elite group of “211 Project Universities” as well the more recently established category of “Double First Class Disciplines Universities”.

As an Honorary Professor at Jinan University, Ole Petersen gave a series of lectures at the School of Medicine on the University’s Main Campus as well as at the completely new South Campus. He also held meetings with the Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Huadong Wang, and made a special presentation to the School of Medicine’s Executive Committee about Academia Europaea, the Cardiff University Hub and its work for the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism.

Plans were agreed for further research collaboration as well as participation of Jinan University in Academia Europaea’s new project on Translational Medicine (TM), which is led by the Cardiff Hub and co-chaired by Professors Hegyi MAE, Holgate MAE and Petersen MAE. Shuang Peng, Associate Professor at Jinan University, who obtained his PhD from Cardiff University last year for research carried out in the Petersen – Gerasimenko Group in the School of Biosciences (which led to a ground-breaking publication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation [2018]), will be a key participant in the TM project.
