Cardiff Hub at Hay Festival 2019: sustainable food systems

The Cardiff Hub was delighted to attend the internationally-renowned Hay Festival this year.  The first day of the festival focused on the topic of food.  The Hub is working currently on a systematic review on sustainable food systems for the European Commission.

Speakers at Hay highlighted the complexity of our food system, and what they saw as the need for significant policy change.  Themes covered included:

  • The challenges posed by the current emphasis on the intensive production of food;
  • The cultural and social relationship between individuals and food.  Speakers examined the impact of the slimming industry and fashion, as well as changing dietary trends (such as veganism);
  • The future role of plastic packaging in supermarkets and the shift away from a ‘culture of disposability’;
  • The rise of the ‘rewilding’ movement and its impact on farming.

The Hay Festival continues to 3rd June.

28th May 2019. For further information please contact Louise Edwards, Hub Manager EdwardsL31@cardiff.ac.uk
