Donald Dingwell receives Canadian VIP Career Achievement award

Professor Donald Bruce Dingwell, Vice-President of Academia Europaea and AE Cardiff Hub Steering Group member, has received the VIP Career Achievement Award from the Geological Association of Canada (CAC) for his career achievements, his intellectual abilities and his adaptability to explore widely contrasting questions in volcanology and igneous petrology. He is the first scientist working outside Canada to be so-honoured in the 25-year history of the award.

Academia Europaea supports Physiology Congress in Ukraine

Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe (according to the official GDP/capita figures) and is furthermore engaged in a war in the eastern part of the country, defending itself against a formidable aggressor state. In spite of these challenges, scientific work of high quality continues. One of the strongest scientific societies in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Physiological Society, held its 20th Congress in Kiev at the famous Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, from 27 – 30 May 2019, supported by Academia Europaea and UNESCO. The festive Opening Session of the Congress included colourful displays and impressive performances of Ukrainian folk songs.

Launching Academia Europaea’s Tbilisi Knowledge Hub


On 24th April 2019, the official opening of Academia Europaea’s 5th Knowledge Hub took place at Tbilisi State University in the presence of the Georgian Prime Minister, Mamuka Bakhtadze. The collaboration agreement between Academia Europaea and Tbilisi State University was signed by the President of Academia Europaea, Sierd Cloetingh MAE, and by the Rector (President) of Tbilisi State University, George Sharvashidze MAE.

Handover of new SAPEA report to the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors

On 11th January 2019, Prof Ole Petersen, Academic Director AE Cardiff Hub and Vice President Academia Europaea, handed over a new SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) report to the European Commission Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) on behalf of the SAPEA Board. Prof Petersen was representing Prof Sierd Cloetingh, President Academia Europaea and Chair of the SAPEA Board, who attended the expert workshop the previous day.

Food from the Oceans at the Swansea Science Festival 2018

The Cardiff Hub was delighted to be at the Swansea Science Festival 2018 on 3-4 November to promote the Food from the Oceans SAPEA report’s key messages. Louise Edwards, Cardiff Hub Manager, was at the event to support two exhibitions within the Aqua Sphere. We collaborated with Dr Ruth Callaway’s Marine Explorers activities on “Protecting our oceans and combatting climate change!” and with Dr Sara Barrento on the SMARTAQUA stand, “The sea is our Fishmonger”.
