The Future of Research: Assessing the impact of Plan S
Plan S requires publications funded by public grants to be published in Open Access journals or platforms from 2021. An international symposium, organised by the AE Cardiff Hub with KU Leuven Libraries, assesses the impact of Plan S on researchers, research-intensive institutions, societies and publishers.
Evidence-informed policy: a Norwegian perspective
A seminar hosted by Academia Europaea Bergen Hub assesses the findings of the SAPEA report ‘Making sense of science for policy’ and reflects on what insights might be applied to science advice in Norway
The Academia Europaea Bergen Hub has hosted a successful seminar in Oslo, in collaboration with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The seminar, held on 4th November at the House of Literature, assessed the findings of the recent SAPEA report, Making sense of science for policy and reflected on what insights might be applied to the science advice process in Norway.
Professor Ole Petersen is appointed editor-in-chief of American Physiological Society new journal, ‘Function’
Our director, Professor Ole Petersen, has been appointed Founding Editor-in-Chief of Function, the newest American Physiological Society publication. The appointment is an important landmark in the development of APS’ new journal, which is scheduled to launch in 2020.
‘Making sense of science for policy’ report will be promoted at the EMBL Science and Society Conference

Update on the launch of the SAPEA Evidence Review Report ‘Making sense of science for policy’
The latest SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) Evidence Review Report, Making sense of science for policy under conditions of complexity and uncertainty, was coordinated by the Cardiff Hub and published on 9th July 2019.
In the month after the launch, the report has featured in 16 articles Europe-wide, including Research Professional (with over 280,000 registered users worldwide) and Cardiff University’s website.
Cardiff Hub Oversees Completion of new Evidence Review on Science Advice for Policy
The AE Cardiff Hub has overseen the completion of the Evidence Review Report Making sense of science for policy under conditions of complexity and uncertainty for the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) as part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM). The report has been launched on Tuesday 9th July 2019.
The Hub participates in Horizon 2020 Annual Event in Wales
The AE Cardiff Hub participated in the Welsh Government’s Horizon 2020 Annual Event celebrated on Thursday 4th July 2019 in Cardiff. The theme of the event was ‘Wales, UK, Europe and beyond: opportunities and challenges for research and innovation’. The event included an expert panel session, a networking lunch and presentations by Baudewijn Morgan, Head of the Horizon 2020 Unit, and Jeremy Miles AM, Counsel General and Brexit Minister, among others.
SAPEA report on how to transform the future of ageing is published today
A major new Evidence Review Report entitled Transforming the Future of Ageing has been published today by SAPEA and led by the Federation of European Academies of Medicine. The report is destined for the desks of the new European Commissioners expected to take office later in 2019. It reviews the best evidence on what public policies might help EU countries to achieve inclusive, fair and sustainable health and social care in the future.
