Cardiff Hub starts to debate Plan S, the new European initiative on open-access publishing

Academia Europaea’s 30th anniversary reception, held at Cardiff University on 14th January, featured a lively discussion on Plan S, an initiative for open-access science publishing. Plan S was launched in September 2018 by an international consortium of research funders, cOAlition S, supported by the ERC and launched by Science Europe.

Prof Ole Petersen, the Hub’s Academic Director, and Dr Mangala Srinivas, Chair Young Academy of Europe (YAE), introduced the topic, followed by audience discussion.

Hub hosts major international symposium to mark milestone birthday of Prof Ole Petersen

On 6th /7th March, the Cardiff Hub hosted a major international symposium, Physiology and Pathophysiology 2018, to mark the 75th birthday of Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS ML MAE, Vice-President of Academia Europaea.  The event attracted 90 delegates from across the world, many of whom had worked with or been mentored by Professor Petersen.

Celebration to mark the renovation of the Norwegian Church in Cardiff

As part of the Food from the Oceans public event, a celebratory reception was hosted at the Norwegian Church to mark the 25th anniversary of its renovation.  The reception was hosted on two days, 14th and 15th July, as a partnership between the Cardiff Hub and Welsh Norwegian Society.  It was kindly supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

Annual Conference 2016

Annual Conference 2016

The Academia Europaea Annual Conference 2016 was hosted by the Cardiff Hub in June. With 148 delegates from 21 countries, including the US, China and Singapore, in addition to many European nations, the Conference featured a stimulating programme of short lectures by newly-elected Members of Academia Europaea.  A highlight was the Erasmus Lecture, given by Lord Martin Rees, the UK’s Astronomer Royal.
