Sir Arnold Burgen FRS, the Founding President of AE, has passed away


Sir Arnold, the Founding President of Academia Europaea (AE), passed away 26th May, after a short illness. He had celebrated his 100th birthday on 20th March 2022.

About Nils-Eric Sahlin MAE

Professor Nils-Eric Sahlin MAE is the former Chair of the Swedish Research Council’s Expert Group on Ethics and a current member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE).  He was a member of the SAPEA international working group that produced the Evidence Review Report, Making Sense of Science for Policy under Conditions of Complexity and Uncertainty (SAPEA, 2019), which was coordinated by Academia Europaea.

Cardiff’s Graham Hutchings MAE an author of the newly-published report on Carbon Capture and Utilisation

Professor Graham Hutchings of Cardiff University and Member of Academia Europaea (MAE), is one of the authors of the newly-published evidence review report, Novel carbon capture and utilisation technologies: research and climate aspects.   Professor Hutchings was selected as one of the working group members that produced the report for the European Commission.

Cardiff Hub presents at Lisbon Academy of Sciences

Louise Edwards, Hub Manager, represented SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and Academia Europaea at a high-profile event held at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences on 23rd May.  The meeting brought together a number of Portuguese experts to examine the Food from the Oceans reports, published through the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism last November.

“This is how science for policy can work”: Sofia symposium

Food from the Oceans, was one of the case studies at the policy symposium,  Shaping European science advice: insights and experience, held in Sofia on 17th May.  Food from the Oceans was the first evidence review to be led by the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium, with the Cardiff Hub as project manager.

 The American Physiological Society (APS) has announced the 2018 recipients of its distinguished lecturer awards. Professor Ole H. Petersen, MD, of Cardiff University, is the winner of the Physiology in Perspective: The Walter B. Cannon Award Lectureship.

Hub hosts major international symposium to mark milestone birthday of Prof Ole Petersen

On 6th /7th March, the Cardiff Hub hosted a major international symposium, Physiology and Pathophysiology 2018, to mark the 75th birthday of Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS ML MAE, Vice-President of Academia Europaea.  The event attracted 90 delegates from across the world, many of whom had worked with or been mentored by Professor Petersen.

Food from the Oceans presented at Blue Innovation event in Brussels

The Food from the Oceans Evidence Review Report and Scientific Opinion were discussed during the Blue innovation: Oceans to Feed the Planet Roundtable. The event took place on 27th February 2018 in Brussels and was organised by the Science Business Network, a highly prestigious European think-tank.
