Cardiff Hub at Hay Festival 2019: sustainable food systems
The Cardiff Hub was delighted to attend the internationally-renowned Hay Festival this year. The first day of the festival focused on the topic of food. The Hub is working currently on a systematic review on sustainable food systems for the European Commission.

Cardiff Hub Director visits China
Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS, Academic Director of the Academia Europaea – Cardiff University Knowledge Hub and Vice-President of Academia Europaea, visited Jinan University in Guangzhou, China last week. Jinan University is one of the oldest and largest (~50000 students) Universities in China, dating back to the Qing Dynasty and belongs to the elite group of “211 Project Universities” as well the more recently established category of “Double First Class Disciplines Universities”.
AE Cardiff Hub promotes its work at UKRI GCRF Event on Food Systems and Resilience
On 26th March, the AE Cardiff Hub contributed to a UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) – GCRF (Global Challenges Research Fund) Regional Event on Food Systems and Resilience, organised by Cardiff University’s Research and Innovation Services Team. This was one of a series of events, for the UKRI to provide an update on live and upcoming ODA (Official Development Assistance) calls/activities, and to discuss key topics.

AE’s 30th Annual Conference takes place in Barcelona
Over 100 members of Academia Europaea travelled from far and wide to attend Academia Europaea’s 30th Annual Conference, Building Bridges, in Barcelona which took place on 29th November 2018. The event was held at the atmospheric Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC), home to the Barcelona Knowledge Hub.

Cardiff and Bergen Hubs strengthen cultural ties: Prisoner of War exhibition in Cardiff Bay
The Cardiff Hub was delighted to be one of the invited guests to the opening of a new art exhibition at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay. Prisoner of War is the work of Bergen artist Bodil Friele and draws on wartime experiences of her father, recorded in his notebooks and poems. He was in a Halifax bomber plane shot down near Hamburg in 1943 and spent the rest of the war in a Nazi POW camp.
Academia Europaea Vice-President at the Armenian National Academy’s 75th Anniversary
Armenia’s National Academy of Science, now officially named the National Academy of Sciences Republic of Armenia (NASRA), was established in 1943 and celebrated its 75th Anniversary on 17th and 18th October.
Cardiff Hub presents at Lisbon Academy of Sciences
Louise Edwards, Hub Manager, represented SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and Academia Europaea at a high-profile event held at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences on 23rd May. The meeting brought together a number of Portuguese experts to examine the Food from the Oceans reports, published through the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism last November.

“This is how science for policy can work”: Sofia symposium
Food from the Oceans, was one of the case studies at the policy symposium, Shaping European science advice: insights and experience, held in Sofia on 17th May. Food from the Oceans was the first evidence review to be led by the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium, with the Cardiff Hub as project manager.
